A win and two defeats on opening day

The season opener for the First XI at Egerton Park provided a classic Premier Division encounter that went right down to the wire, eventually seeing us edged out in a high-scoring thriller by just two wickets.

Batting first, we set a competitive target of 237 for 9 from our full 50 overs. It was a day of fresh faces in the First XI as we welcomed competitive debuts for Abhay Katoch, Alex Kent, Henry Rogers, and our South African overseas star, Dewan Marais.

Dewan looked immediately at home, top-scoring with a composed 39, while Alex Kent and Abhay Katoch also made vital contributions with 25 and 28 runs respectively to help build our total. Jake Gillett provided the early spark with 29 at the top of the order.

Our defense of the total was led by an inspired spell from Henry Rogers on his debut. Henry claimed 3 for 40 from his nine overs, including the crucial wickets of the opponents' top three batters to keep us firmly in the hunt. Ryan Dawson also played his part with two wickets as we pushed the hosts all the way into the final over.

However, match-winning contributions from Egerton Park's Mahir Manilal (49) and captain Tom Glover (42) anchored their chase. Despite a late flurry of wickets our hosts managed to cross the line with just four balls to spare in their first outing since promotion to the Premier Division.

While the 13 points are a solid start, the performance of our debutants gives us plenty of optimism for the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, at Cobalt Cricket Ground Mill Lane, the sun was out as the Second XI kicked off our Premier One campaign, and while the result didn't quite fall our way, there were plenty of positives to take into the coming weeks.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, we posted a competitive 220 for 8 from our 45 overs, built on the back of some resilient work at the top of the order.

Micky Ruddle led the charge for us with a beautifully constructed 76, showing his class with ten boundaries and a maximum. He found a reliable partner in Tom Oliver, who fell just one run short of a well-deserved half-century.

Their partnership laid a formidable foundation, allowing us to build a score that we felt was defendable on a day that saw Kahil Mann-Kler make his competitive debut for the club.

Despite that solid start, we hit the skids in the middle overs and it was down to late contributions for us to set a competitive score..

Sean Dudley and Tom Brotherhood, eventually pushing us past the 200 mark but 220 was far shy from where it looked like we would end up at the drinks break.

We knew we would need to be clinical with the ball to stifle the Electricity Sports chase, and we started brightly with early wickets from skipper Will Wade and Sam Gale to leave the visitors under pressure at 59 for 3.

However, the game turned on a massive fourth-wicket stand from the visitors.

Krish Tandel played a match-winning hand for Electricity Sports, falling agonizingly close to a century on 98 before being run out by Brady Glennon. He was expertly supported by skipper Andy Deacon, whose 60 helped steer the chase through the middle overs and ultimately took the game away from us.

Despite our best efforts to break the partnership and claw back into the contest, Electricity Sports reached the target with five wickets and five overs to spare.I

It’s a tough result to take after such a strong start with the bat, but the grit shown by the team, especially in that opening stand, gives us a great platform to build on as the season progresses.

We enjoyed a clinical day at Mill Lane, as our Third XI secured a dominant 124-run victory over Cropston's second string in a performance defined by disciplined batting and a truly sensational bowling debut from Curtis Mayfield.

Batting first, we set a solid foundation through the patience of skipper Connor Simon and Sam Davies.

Simon led from the front with a vital 51, while Davies played the anchor role to perfection, top-scoring with a well-earned 57. Their contributions were the heartbeat of our innings, steering us toward a competitive total of 188 for 9 after our 45 overs.

The middle order found the going tougher, largely due to a standout performance from Cropston’s Dulan Dissanayake, who threatened to derail our progress with a 5-wicket haul. Sandip Patel also proved difficult to get away, picking up three wickets as the visitors fought back. However, late runs from Chris Preston and an unbeaten cameo from Charlie Marsh ensured we had plenty to defend.

The day also marked competitive debuts for James Mountain and Mayfield, whi delivered one of the most remarkable debut performances in recent memory.

Our opening bowlers set the tone, but it was Mayfield who truly took the game away from Cropston.

In a whirlwind spell, he tore through the batting lineup to finish with incredible figures of 6 for 10 from just five overs. Supported by Tom Fraser, who claimed 2 for 1 from 3 overs, and wickets for Preston and Marsh, we made short work of the chase.

Cropston were eventually dismissed for just 64 in the 23rd over, completing a comprehensive team performance that gives us plenty of momentum for the season ahead.
