We are devastated to hear of the passing of former 2nd XI Captain and Treasurer Paul Sharman.

Paul passed away on Friday 22 January from a heart attack. He was 60 years old.

Paul held a long association with the club, having arrived from Mountsorrel Castle Cricket Club in the late 1980’s before taking on the captaincy of the Second XI in the early 90s, where he played alongside his younger brother Mark.

His time as Captain proved a fruitful one. Several young players flourished under his leadership and went on to become the backbone of the First XI. The likes of future Club Captain James Melody, Elliot Hill, Kristian Richmond, Reg Preston, Pete Willcocks and Rob and Tom Moore all spent time under Paul during that period, which saw the Second team rise up the leagues. He also led the side to the coveted Everards Team of the Month award, which was generally won by First XIs, during that period.

Paul was a solid left-hander and occasional wicketkeeper, but it was his skills as a captain which stood out as he had that knack of getting the best out of those around him.

His involvement with the club was not limited to on field activity. He held the role of Treasurer for several years, the position of club secretary for a time and was also heavily involved in the development of the main Mill Lane pavilion. Paul was fittingly made a Life Member for his services to the club and was jointly awarded the Bert Goodwin Trophy in 1992 and 1997 again for services to the club. He was also a qualified coach and was involved in the junior set up for a number of years.

He leaves behind wife Lesley and two daughters Abbie and Ashleigh. Our thoughts go out to the whole Sharman family for their loss – Paul will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

The family plan to hold a celebration of Paul’s life at the Matt Hampson Foundation later this year when the Covid restrictions allow. They will be planting a tree on site in honour of Paul. The Matt Hampson Foundation was a project very close to Paul’s heart and something he was immensely proud to be a part of. If anyone would like to make a donation to the Matt Hampson foundation in Paul's memory then please follow the link below.
