Firsts fall short in quest for third

Firsts fall short in quest for third

Website Administrator23 Sep 2023 - 05:23

A look at the final weekend of the 2023 cricket season, where there was still plenty on the line for our sides.

Heading in to the final day the Firsts had their eyes on a winner takes all date with Loughborough Town at Mill Lane, with the winner securing third spot behind Kibworth and Rothley.

However, a 36-run reverse put pay to those hopes. That was despite Loughborough losing 7-48 and a final tear of 5-22 to slip from 185 for 3 to 233 all out.

Our reply stuttered with the middle order blown away as they lost five wickets for eight runs to all but end the game as a contest.

Ajay Khunti (64) and Josh Winterton (26) gave their side hope with a stand of 57 for the seventh wicket while Ryan Dawson added a patient 16 in an eighth wicket alliance with Khunti which realised 51 runs.

However, both fell in quick succession and they were bowled out for 197 with three overs still in the bank.

Meanwhile, the Thirds would end their season with a win and would also finish fourth thanks to a five wicket win over Bitteswell at Mill Lane.

The visitors were indebted to Ollie Faulkner's 68 in their total of 183 - George Bolton taking 4-65 and Bhurva Tank 3-26.

The Threes reply centred around 60 from Pete Willcocks and an unbeaten 63 from Joe Davies as they eased home with plenty of overs and five wickets in the bank.

Both sides end the season in fourth spot in the Premier League and Division Four East respectively while the Twos will be plying their trade in Division One again next season after topping Division Two and the Fours will return to Division Seven as they topped Division Eight East.
